A Comparison of WBTs v PCs
Server based computing has a very different architecture
to a client-server architecture of PCs, where some data
and applications are stored locally on PCs spread throughout
the organisation.
Below is an example of the server based architecture,
it highlights how all WBTs are networked to a central
server. This can be spread across a variety of networks,
including LAN/WANs and across multiple sites.

WBT Applications
Server based computing and Windows Based Terminals
can save organisations huge amounts of time and money.
So, which environments are ideal for such a model? There
are many industry sectors that are suitable for WBTs,
these include:
• Education
• Healthcare
• Finance
• Government
• Retail
• Tourism
• Manufacturing
• Construction
• Call Centres and Data Entry Centres
This list is by no means exhaustive. There are situations
where server based computing is not an ideal solution.
For example, high-performance workstations would be
necessary for jobs that require significant local processing
power such as graphical tools and image editors.
There are numerous benefits that organisations can
derive from implementing server based computing. Some
of these are listed below
• Reduce Desktop costs
• Reduce IT staffing costs and time
• Reduce desktop maintenance costs
• Remove the need for continual desktop software
and application upgrades
• Remove viruses from the desktop workstation
• Reduce training costs
• Reduce network bandwidth costs
• Reduce proliferation of remote servers (across
networks) by centralisation
• Less system downtime through improved disaster
recovery capabilities
• Less desktop space required for WBTs, thus
greater optimisation of office space
• Eliminates software, hardware and data theft/loss
• Easier to expand and change network
• Improves user support
Cost Analysis WBTs v PCs
Direct costs include initial price of the WBT and PC
and software costs etc. WBTs not only last longer than
PCs, but also are cheaper to replace.
Indirect costs include items such as electricity consumed,
workspace required. It will also include costs organisation
costs such as air conditioning. As WBTs have no moving
parts they generate next to no heat unlike PCs, which
can generate substantial heat thus organisations will
have greater utility charges.
